Reggie Alcanter is the eccentric, yet sinister, owner/builder of The Flaming Sword Inn. Reggie builds it as an excuse for his mistress. Even though he is not an architect, Reggie also builds The Pelican Arms Hotel, which is up the road from The Flaming Sword. Husband and wife Josh and Jennifer Freud are the first customers to stay at the Pelican Arms in years. Josh finds the Pelican Arms because it is available and at the right price. Josh and Jennifer are hungry after driving for several hours, but the hotel hasn’t had a kitchen since it was destroyed by the ’47 fire. The desk clerk refers them to a diner about three miles back up the road. Josh and Jennifer thank the clerk for his help and head to their room, where they find a black walnut king-sized canopy bed, inlaid marble fireplace with a wrought iron fire grate and brass accented screen, and a gilt frame mirror above the fireplace mantle, all evoking the image of a once-grand hotel. Ironically, a short while later, another couple, Charles and Anne Dann, show up at the hotel front desk. Their flight has been delayed, so Charles is unhappy when they finally arrive at the hotel. Charles and Anne are also hungry and ask where they can get a decent meal. The clerk also directs them to the lone diner about three miles back up the road. He tells them the diner’s food isn’t too bad, but warns them that the service isn’t great. When they get to their room, Charles and Anne find a rosewood, canopied four-poster king-size bed with a massive armoire, a separate sitting room, and a lavish bathroom. They don’t really care though, as they are so tired that they just crash on the bed for the night. They both awake the next morning feeling even more tired than they did when they arrived the previous day, but they chalk it up to jet lag. The two couples occupy their time by seeing the sites and exploring the area around the hotel. They find activities they enjoy to occupy their time. But eerily strange things begin to happen. Jennifer finds a covered mall where she wants to spend time shopping. Josh discovers a golf course behind the Pelican Arms. Josh and Jennifer discover a restaurant about a dozen miles up the road from the diner. But people who have lived in the area for some time tell them there is no mall and there is only the diner, no other restaurant. They begin to think everyone in the area is crazy. Both couples’ hotel rooms have recesses in the walls, which none of them notice at first. From the recesses of the hotel room walls, apparitions beckon to the couples. One couple succumbs to the enticing charms of the figures in the wall, and one couple does not. One couple escapes their vacation with their lives, and one does not. Come on vacation with Josh & Jennifer and Charles & Anne. Fight the feeling that you may be losing your mind when people tell you that places you have seen and other people you have met do not even exist.
