Swerlie-Wherlie, the adventurous piglet, is exploring a quarry when he slips and is helped by Butts the Goat. Butts offers to show him his secret place ? deep underground. They find a friend of Swerlie-Wherlie, Shep the sheepdog, locked in a small room in one of the underground passages. Trying to escape from the humans who had locked him in, they fall into a tunnel and get lost. They are saved by the sudden appearance of Izzzzzabella the grass snake, another friend of Swerlie-Wherlie who knows a way out but first they must try and rescue Shep. They are too late. Shep was not where they had left him. Izzzzzabella knows of a short cut that would take them to where Shep might be. Unfortunately, they got there just as Shep is being taken away. Swerlie-Wherlie had an idea that might save Shep but only if Butts can do what goats are famous for.
