The author has based the two main characters on real people - his grandmother Mary, and her sister Ruth, who actually worked for the Steamship Company (owned by their Aunt Clem's husband, Charlie Morse). Mary Cowles, was unaccounted for during a four year period (during a time when most people - including her - wrote many letters).
