As painful as it was, I knew I had to go. I threw Clara one final glance before making a run for it. One of the pirates made a move to intercept me, but Clara threw herself at him, giving me just enough time to escape. I only made it a few feet before the captainーa man in his late fortiesーgot his throat sliced right before me. Seeing the life leave his eyes and the blood spurt from his gash was too much for me to handle. I stopped running and keeled over, puking my guts out. The horror of what I had just seen left me in a daze. I wandered around aimlessly, people dying all around me. Oddly, no one seemed interested in me. I was a woman and as such not an immediate threat. This gave me a chance to reach the banister. By then, I was back in control of my body and actively looking for a place to hide. But no matter where I looked, people were being slaughtered. I was trapped, with no place to hide. Then I saw it. The pirate ship.
