Trivaine was the captain of Princess Thiria's Honor Guard, but since the King disbanded the unit for political reasons as part of his rise to High King, Trivaine has never been able to let go of his resentment towards him. Now Trivaine lives a roaming life together with his five-year-old son, who has a squeemish character that Trivaine has a hard time handling. Suddenly, rumors reach him, and they tell of an invasion by north men, and with the High King gone to negotiate a peace with Largunia, Princess Thiria has apparently taken it upon herself to deal with the invaders of the north. Trivaine finds himself torn between an old oath, to the daugther of the King he hates, and the love and responsibility for his little boy.
