Who could possibly hate Graham Herbert? Everyone hated Graham Herbert. Maybe not everyone, just everyone who knew him, which included all the members of the Torquay Book Club of which Graham was a member and the host of the latest club meeting. What appeared to be a successful night turned quickly to tragedy when Graham is found next morning dead. It was hard to escape the feeling he probably deserved it. The postmortem and toxicology report confirms poisoning, ingested by snorting cocaine laced with strychnine. Suspicion immediately falls on the book club members, as each of them had more than a good reason to see Graham dead. The police immediately suspect Reg and Billy, and Billy’s friend Jeff, whose shady past included dabbling in making poisons for fun. When Graham’s son, Rob, returns from London, the police quickly learn that of all people, none has a greater reason to see Graham dead than his only son. But not everyone is convinced a book club member is the murderer. Sophie Savvas is a local doctor and she is convinced none of her fellow club members is guilty, despite what the police suspect, so she mounts her own investigation tracking down the woman, Andy, Graham spent his last moments with, and who unwittingly supplied Graham with the cocaine laced with strychnine. The question Sophie seeks to answer is, who supplied Andy with the dodgy coke? Unable to reveal to the police what she knows about Graham unless she incriminate herself, Sophie teams up with her long-time friend, Evelyn, to search for Andy, travelling through the seedy underside of Melbourne’s drug-land, landing her in Sydney where her life is threatened before escaping back to Torquay to uncover the shocking and totally unexpected truth. As each book club member’s story is told, the secrets involving Graham are revealed, which in turn work to destroy the relationships between the club members. In death, Graham continues to destroy the lives of everyone in the club. This modern take on the mystery / crime novel is not only a gripping yarn, it is also a commentary on contemporary society, gender politics, relationships, dysfunctional families and how revenge is always a deliciously irresistible motive for murder.画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。
